Gemini Without VPN: How to Make Google’s Neural Network Work on iPhone While ChatGPT Is Jealous

Google Gemini is already here, but for us, in Russia, its browser version is a synonym for the word VPN. Which means a bunch of extra clicks and a waste of time. Forget it! If you have an iPhone, there is a way to launch Gemini directly!

Gemini Without VPN: How to Make Google's Neural Network Work on iPhone While ChatGPT Is Jealous

Installing Gemini on iPhone: Step-by-step instructions without VPN

So, how to tame Gemini on your Apple device? We will need a ready-made shortcut command, thanks to the guys from iOSshortcut . Here’s how it works:

  1. If you don’t have it yet, download the “ Commands ” app from the App Store on your iPhone.
  2. After installation, feel free to click on this magic link .
  3. A button will appear at the bottom of the screen – click “Add”.
  4. Once the “Gemini Chat” command is registered in the application, click on it, ask your first question and grant the necessary permissions. Done!

You will communicate with Gemini via a text field. No one forbids you to use voice input, so the speed of the dialogue can be increased. The answers will appear in the same compact window. But there is a trick: if you see that the text of the answer is interrupted by an ellipsis, just tap anywhere in the answer. It will immediately turn into a text file that can be shared via any convenient application.

How to do it:

  1. We launch the “Gemini Chat” command and enter a request.
  2. We are waiting for a response from the neural network.
  3. Tap on the response text to convert it into a document.
  4. At the bottom, click “Share” and choose where to send.

Important nuance: Gemini Chat is still a neural network. It needs a stable Internet connection and time to think. So the answers may not come instantly – sometimes you will have to wait a little. Keep this in mind.

What Gemini Can Do on iPhone (and Where It’s Still Falling Down)

Overall, Google’s Gemini is a classic generative neural network. The range of queries is huge. For example, I asked it to create a quiz question about Apple with four possible answers – it did it without any problems.

She’s also good at math. But when it came to searching for fresh information on the Internet, there was confusion. The neural network couldn’t tell me which Apple product went on sale on February 2, 2024, even though I specifically told her that she could and should search the Internet.

It looks like she hasn’t learned how to surf the Internet in real time yet. In comparison, ChatGPT handled this task playfully, and even named the price, pre-order date, and countries where the device is officially available. So, if you need the most up-to-date info, Gemini may let you down – you’ll have to Google the old-fashioned way.

Lifehack: Add Gemini to your desktop and lock screen

If you like the “pocket” Gemini, let’s make it even more convenient to launch. Dragging to the “Commands” app every time is not our method. Let’s put the icon right on the desktop and even on the lock screen!

To the desktop:

  1. Open “Commands”, “Quick Commands” tab.
  2. Long press on “Gemini Chat” and select “More details” from the pop-up menu.
  3. On the “More” tab, tap “Add to Home screen”.
  4. Select the icon color, write the name (for example, “Gemini”).
  5. Save by clicking the “Add” button.

To the lock screen (for super fast access):

  1. We unlock the iPhone, but remain on the lock screen.
  2. Hold your finger on the screen to enter editing mode.
  3. At the bottom, click “Configure”, select the lock screen.
  4. Touch the field under the clock (“Add widgets”).
  5. Scroll down to “Teams” and add the widget by tapping.
  6. Without leaving the editing mode, tap on the new widget and select “Gemini Chat” from the list.
  7. Save the changes.

Now you have several ways to instantly launch Gemini. Choose the one that is most convenient for you and use it!
